MINNEAPOLIS – In an escalation against civilians in the state on Sunday, Gov. Tim Walz’s security forces attacked and detained peaceful protesters at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building near Minneapolis.

The building, located inside Ft. Snelling, has served as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters for the midwest region. It was the site of multiple days of attacks against civilians by federal forces loyal to President Donald Trump.

State Troopers, along with state conservation officers and Hennepin County Sheriff deputies, repeatedly charged into the crowd to arrest peaceful protesters, who dispersed after being threatened with chemical agents and 40mm grenade launchers.

State police and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office have largely taken over protecting Trump’s paramilitary force in the building as part of the agreements between Department of Homeland Security officials and state and local leaders. The agreements seek to bring down the number of federal police in the state who were deployed during Operation Metro Surge.

While marketed as an immigration enforcement operation, the surge was intended to punish Minnesota, a state famously hostile to Republican presidents.

Federal forces killed two civilians, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, during the operation.
