Fascist fear empathy, we can use it to win

For today’s Anti-fascist Friday, I’d like to talk for a bit about how being kind to your neighbors and other community members is the most powerful weapon we have.

Kindness and empathy for those around us is the single most important thing we can use to fight the very worst human impulses.

So this weekend, do something nice for someone. Bring in your neighbor’s garbage, volunteer to bring someone food or bring some hand warmers to a protest.

But please, most of all, hug your loved ones.

As we saw this week with the killing of Renee Good by Trump loyalist forces in Minneapolis, the ability to be around those we love may get cut short.

There is a mom absent this world now and the impact is being felt across the country.

But the people in power do not get to take away our humanity. No matter how ugly and black their hearts may be, we will always have the ability to help those in need.

We must love our community unconditionally and without reserve. This is what the fascist fears the most.

Resistance takes a lot of different forms and radical empathy is the building block of all the others.

While the fight is far from over, we will win because we must.

Keep your head up and your fists clenched. We’ll get through this together.
